Financial technology firm OPay has adopted Nigeria’s domestic card, AfriGO, as part of its efforts to enhance digital payment services across the country.
The AfriGO card, developed under Nigeria’s National Domestic Card Scheme, is powered by Afrigopay Financial Services Limited (AFSL), a subsidiary of the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS).
Speaking on the initiative, OPay’s Managing Director, Mr. Dauda Gotring, emphasised the firm’s commitment to simplifying financial services for Nigerians. According to him, adopting the AfriGO card aligns seamlessly with OPay’s vision of promoting financial inclusion and expanding digital payment access.
“Our partnership with AfriGO aligns perfectly with our goal of simplifying financial services for every Nigerian,” Mr. Gotring stated. He highlighted that the AfriGO card would serve as a powerful tool to widen the user base within the fintech ecosystem and address the needs of underserved populations.
“The OPay/AfriGO card is not just a product; it is a powerful tool that will enable us to reach more Nigerians, particularly those who have been underserved by traditional banking services. This will provide Nigerians with a more affordable payment option, enable instant settlement of transactions, and further promote financial inclusion across the country,” he stated.
Managing Director of Afrigopay Financial Services Ltd. (AFSL), Mrs. Ebehijie Momoh, echoed similar sentiments, noting that the partnership would bring significant value to the fintech ecosystem. She stressed that agent networks supported by AfriGO would enhance financial service delivery, especially in underserved areas, by offering essential banking services such as deposits, withdrawals, money transfers, and purchases.
“This partnership is set to transform financial service delivery, particularly in underserved areas. Agent networks expand coverage by supporting local businesses and offering key banking services, thus enhancing accessibility and promoting financial inclusion,” Mrs. Momoh said.
She further described the AfriGO card as a cutting-edge financial tool designed with robust technology infrastructure and effective liquidity management to ensure smooth and secure operations. Highlighting its key feature, she pointed to the AfriGO Instant Settlement service, which provides immediate transaction finalisation, benefiting merchants and agents with improved cash flow, greater efficiency, and reduced risks.
“With AfriGO Instant Settlement service, merchants and agents will benefit from the immediate finalisation of transactions, leading to greater efficiency, improved cash flow, and reduced risk. Supported by robust technology infrastructure and effective liquidity management, together, we will make financial services faster and more accessible,” she noted.
