The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), in collaboration with its partners, has launched the Nigeria Reputation Management Group (NRMG).
This move aimed at promoting the country’s positive image and reshaping global perceptions of Nigeria. This recent initiative was unveiled in Abuja, with key government figures urging Nigerians to actively contribute to improving the nation’s reputation both locally and internationally.
Speaking at the launch, Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mr. Mohammed Idris, emphasised the importance of redefining Nigeria’s identity to foster a stronger global presence. He stated that Nigeria’s reputation is its most valuable asset, noting that a robust national brand can attract talent, tourism, and investment, thereby fuelling national development.
“A positive national brand creates a virtuous cycle of growth and opportunity, whereas a weak one deters progress,” Mr. Idris remarked.
He stated: “For Nigeria to thrive globally, we must first strengthen our reputation at home by addressing our challenges and highlighting our strengths.”
Mr. Idris further urged Nigerian leaders to prioritise ethical leadership as a crucial part of enhancing the country’s image. “Good governance is not about slogans; it is about genuinely putting people first. Only then can we achieve a future of integrity, accountability, and shared prosperity.”
Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, echoed similar sentiments, stressing that in today’s interconnected world, a nation’s reputation is shaped not only by its actions but also by how those actions are perceived globally.
“Nigeria must take control of its narrative through effective communication,” Amb. Tuggar said.
“We should tell our story in a way that is both truthful and inspiring, framing our challenges within a broader narrative of resilience and progress.”
Dr. Ike Neliaku, President of the NIPR, highlighted the importance of a deliberate approach to creating Nigeria’s identity.
“Reputation, whether for a country or an individual, is a valuable asset that requires careful cultivation. Nigeria’s image needs deliberate and strategic efforts to rebuild and sustain it,” he said, stating that the NRMG is poised to play a key role in this endeavour.
The NRMG aims to project Nigeria’s core values and principles, fostering a more favourable global image while addressing challenges that have historically affected the nation’s reputation.
