Citibank Nigeria Limited has announced the appointment of Nneka Enwereji as its new Managing Director (MD)\ Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
The appointment, effected since August 19, 2024, follows the approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria. Enwereji succeeds Ireti Samuel-Ogbu, who retired after a distinguished 36-year career with Citi.
The announcement was made public in a recent statement issued by Lola Oyeka, Head of Public Affairs for Nigeria and Ghana Global Communications Enterprise Services and Public Affairs. Enwereji’s elevation to the top role at Citibank Nigeria marks a crucial moment in the bank’s leadership, as she brings over three decades of banking experience to the position.
Dr. Shamsuddeen Usman, Chairman of Citibank Nigeria Limited, expressed confidence in Enwereji’s abilities, noting: “I am very happy about Nneka’s appointment. Her deep industry knowledge, strong leadership skills, and a clear vision for the future will ensure the bank continues to help Citi’s clients navigate an increasingly dynamic environment. It has been a pleasure working with her as an Executive Director and I look forward to working with her as the MD/CEO of Citibank Nigeria Limited.”
Akin Dawodu, Sub-Saharan Africa Sub-Cluster Head for Citi, echoed this sentiment, stating: “Nneka is a strong leader with a proven track record of growing businesses, deepening client relationships, and building strong partnerships. I am confident that she will continue to deliver value for our clients and other stakeholders.”
Enwereji, who previously served as Citi’s Head of Global Network Banking across the Sub-Saharan Africa sub-cluster, is well-known for her ability to steer complex markets towards record business growth. Her career at Citi has spanned various high-impact roles, including GNB Co-Head for the Middle East and Africa, Africa Trade Services Head, and Financial Institutions SSA Trade Head. Her expertise encompasses Markets, Corporate & Investment Banking, Transaction Services, Risk Management, and Operations.
On her new role, Enwereji said: “I am excited about this new chapter at the helm of Citibank Nigeria Limited, working with our dedicated team to deliver the full value of Citi’s network to clients and stakeholders.”
Enwereji’s impressive academic background includes a first-class degree in Computer Science and Economics from Obafemi Awolowo University and an MBA from Warwick Business School, UK. She has also attended executive programs at Yale School of Management and the University of California, Berkeley.
Her appointment is notable not only for Citibank Nigeria but also for the broader banking industry in Nigeria, as it further increases the number of female bank MDs in the country. Enwereji’s leadership is expected to drive Citibank Nigeria forward, ensuring the bank remains a key player in the increasingly dynamic financial landscape.
With her wealth of experience and proven track record, Enwereji is set to lead Citibank Nigeria into its next phase of growth and innovation.
